As a former math professor at the local community college, I’ve seen thousands of students struggle with keeping their grades up and staying on track to get their degree. Since I taught college algebra (a required course), I dealt with a range of students who were pursing everything from histotechnology degree to an adult education degree.
Often times, I’d have students come up to me asking what they could do to improve their grades. Almost every time, I’d recommend going to a tutor. And almost every time, students would balk at the idea. See, they believed tutors were for academically challenged students.
I disagree. Everyone can use a tutor. The benefits of using one include:
- One on one attention you can’t get in a classroom
- A fresh teaching perspective
- Ability to go over concepts time and time again until you have it down
- Improved grades
- Increased familiarity and comfort with course material
I really need to conduct a study to show just how much students who use a tutor improve. I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes, and I’ve seen some of my brightest pupils take advantage of tutoring services. Everybody can benefit from tutoring.

Going to the San Diego Golf Academy (SDGA) to learn the golf course management field is a wonderful place to get an education if you aspire to become a golf course operator. While it’s possible to have a career working at a golf course, taking classes and getting either an AA or BA degree from golf course management schools will make your application move to the top of the pile when applying for jobs in this field.
The San Diego campus is located in Carlsbad, which is north of San Diego about 20 miles or so. It’s a beautiful location, not far from the beach, and the weather is pleasant year round. When you attend the SDGA, you’ll be playing at some of the most beautiful golf courses in the county, and there are plenty of them to choose from. Golfing is a year round activity in San Diego, and if you’ve ever been there, you know what a beautiful place it is.
The SDGA will prepare you for a solid career in golf business management. If golf is an activity that you truly enjoy, and you want a career with great diversity, golf course management is likely to be a satisfying one for you.

For the last six months or so, I have been seeing a lot of headlines about the rising cost of college. College costs are going up so fast that many experts say Americans are going to stop being able to afford to get a degree.
This is a pretty scary thing, because as college tuition has been going up, so has the importance of a college degree. Most people find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to earn a comfortable wage without a college degree these days. Professional jobs pretty much all require a college education. So if people can no longer afford college, they also won’t be able to get good jobs or afford a middle class life for their families.
In fact, college costs are rising so steeply that they are affecting a generation that is currently being groomed for college. Some families haven’t spent enough time on college planning strategies, and as their high school seniors are graduating they are finding that they may not be able to send their kids to college, after all.
Hopefully something will be done in the near future to prevent college costs from rising so high that only the rich will be able to afford it. In the meantime, though, careful planning and thinking ahead is necessary if you want to be able to afford college — whether for yourself or for your kid. Start saving early, save as much as possible, and research financial aid and scholarships to help fill in the gaps!

An associate’s degree is typically a two-year degree, and is often offered by community colleges or career colleges. They used to be somewhat looked down on, but these days there are all sorts of jobs you can get with an associate’s degree. Here are a few examples.
- Dental hygienists. You can get a pretty good (and well-paying) job as a dental hygienist with just an associate’s degree on the subject. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these workers averaged between $25 and $35 an hour in 2006.
- Golf instruction and/or management. With a golf associate degree, you can get some pretty good jobs in golf, just about anything from teaching the sport to managing a golf business.
- Registered nurse. Nursing is facing a severe shortage right now, so not only are there tons of jobs for RNs with associate’s degrees, but many employers also offer programs to help you complete your degree if you don’t have it yet.
There are tons of good jobs for graduates of associate degree programs, and quite a few of these jobs pay quite well — the jobs listed above are only a few of those available. Before you commit to a bachelor’s degree, you might want to research associate’s degrees and the jobs you can get with them, and see if perhaps you would be able to pursue your career having spent only two years in school instead of four!
