Benefits of Hiring a Tutor
Feb 23, 2009
As a former math professor at the local community college, I’ve seen thousands of students struggle with keeping their grades up and staying on track to get their degree. Since I taught college algebra (a required course), I dealt with a range of students who were pursing everything from histotechnology degree to an adult education degree.
Often times, I’d have students come up to me asking what they could do to improve their grades. Almost every time, I’d recommend going to a tutor. And almost every time, students would balk at the idea. See, they believed tutors were for academically challenged students.
I disagree. Everyone can use a tutor. The benefits of using one include:
- One on one attention you can’t get in a classroom
- A fresh teaching perspective
- Ability to go over concepts time and time again until you have it down
- Improved grades
- Increased familiarity and comfort with course material
I really need to conduct a study to show just how much students who use a tutor improve. I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes, and I’ve seen some of my brightest pupils take advantage of tutoring services. Everybody can benefit from tutoring.

You are correct when you say many student feel that tutors are for the academically challenged. I worked as a tutor at my local community college and the one thing that most students feared most was ridicule. Of course, a good tutor will help to dissuade someone that has those types of fears.

The quality of the tutor also makes a big difference. I have worked as a tutor in the past and I have seen some fellow tutors that did not understand the material as well as their pupils. I have also seen others that would do their pupils homework for them and the person getting tutored learned nothing.

I can tell you from experience that hiring a tutor is the way to go. I could not have passed math in school without my tutor. She was a teacher that took an interest in me and I am thankful she took the time to get me through the course.

What many students don’t realize is that college is nowhere near the same as high school. Most do not know how to properly study. Sometimes a tutor can be useful in helping students to develop proper study habits so that they can take care of the work on their own.
